TIIA AALTONEN

assebly worker

My career at Stera began in 2012, when I got a summer job in Paimio factory's production. At the time, I was studying for a vocational education in Pharmaceutics at the Turku Vocational Institute, and to be honest, I didn't think I would eventually get a job in mechanics. However, this happened and after graduation I got a permanent job at Stera. I haven't regretted my career change yet!

In the early stages of my career, I also worked for a while at Stera's Turku factory in the automotive industry as a quality worker and production worker. However, I returned quite soon to Paimio, where I have since then worked in assembly duties.

I especially like the fact that no two days are identical in this job, due to the variety of assembly tasks. There are many different types of cabinets and boxes, which makes the job interesting. It is nice to be able to work with your hands and sometimes even do heavier jobs. In our team, you can also influence what you do. We have a really good assembly team, with whom we often divide different assemblies or work phases. Coworkers are the best part of this job. I also work as a job instructor in the assembly and in fact I have also guided my good friend to these tasks. It’s nice to be able to work with a friend like that – team work is easy when you can read each other’s thoughts and have a similar working style.

As for supervisors, I feel lucky with my own ones. I think it’s important to get along well with your supervisor and I can honestly say I’ve always had good supervisors, no matter what kind of work I’ve done. For example, with my current supervisor, we also talk a lot about things not related to work, which affects my own job satisfaction.

I think a self-motivated person who is genuinely interested in what he or she does and also works carefully can succeed in these assembly tasks. When different kind of jobs are shared within your own team, you need to be co-operative and have a keen eye on how tasks are shared and sequenced.

Sometimes you also have to change jobs very quickly, so you also need to have flexibility.
